Theses and Dissertations

This guide contains information on finding and writing theses and dissertations.

What is the difference between a thesis and a dissertation?

  • At CityU, a thesis is a final project required to complete a postgraduate research degree, i.e., MPhil., Ph.D., or professional doctorate, while a dissertation is for a taught postgraduate degree.
  • The word "thesis" and "dissertation" are used for a master's degree and a doctorate, respectively, in the US. In the UK, the reverse is true.
