Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is defined by Black's Law Dictionary as a "procedure for settling dispute by means other than litigation". The court system is traditionally established for settlement of disputes and administration of justice. However, the court system is bound by rigid rules and procedure. Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) becomes an increasingly popular option for the community to resolve disputes outside of courts. ADR can be a faster and cheaper way to resolve dispute in a cooperative manner and usually produces more satisfactory results.
ADR can take many forms and the ultimate objective is to resolve dispute without litigation. The common forms of ADR in Hong Kong are:
