Criminal law is one of the basic subjects for law students. It is also a major practice area for some practitioners. Criminal law regulates the orders of the community and the cases of which are frequently reported in the news. Categorization of criminal law is rather crime-specific. To research this subject, practitioners usually start with authoritative commentaries in Hong Kong and United Kingdom. They will further search for cases in Hong Kong and other common law jurisdictions. The courts administrating criminal justice in Hong Kong are the magistrates’ courts, the District Court, the Court of First Instance, the Court of Appeal and the Court of Final Appeal.
