The Relative Activity Index (RAI) is a metric for assessing an entity's research priorities and focus areas in comparison to global trends. This index measures an entity's research activity in a particular subject area relative to the overall global activity in that same subject.

An RAI value of 1.0 indicates that the entity's research activity in a field is exactly in line with the global activity in that field. A value higher than 1.0 suggests that the entity has a greater emphasis on that subject, while a value lower than 1.0 implies a lesser focus.

This index can provide useful insights for research institutions and organizations as they evaluate their strategic priorities and research directions. One area of growing prominence is the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - a framework of 17 interconnected goals addressing global economic, social, and environmental challenges. Researchers worldwide are increasingly aligning their work to contribute to these SDG objectives.

To analyze an institution's SDG research focus using the RAI, the process is as follows:

  • Identify the total publications the institution has related to each of the SDGs.

  • Divide those SDG-specific publication counts by the institution's overall publication volume to get the institution's percentage for each SDG.

  • Perform the same calculation at the global level to determine the world's percentage for each SDG.

  • The institution's SDG RAI is then calculated by dividing its percentage by the world's percentage for each goal.

This SDG RAI can offer valuable insights into how an institution's research efforts compare to worldwide trends in sustainable development research. The SDG RAI data can be accessed and explored using the SciVal tool (Guide). For more guidance on understanding SDGs and utilizing SciVal, please refer to the library's guides on SDG and SciVal.
