The Chinese Academy of Sciences has recently unveiled the Early Warning Journal List 2025. At the end of 2020, the CAS library launched the first version of the “Early Warning List of International Journals (Trial).” This list primarily targets academic misconduct but extends beyond that scope. Its methodology integrates findings from peer review and quantitative analyses. Subsequently, the Early Warning Journal List has been released annually.

This latest edition of the EWL addresses two crucial issues:

  1. Academic misconduct, such as Citation Manipulation and the operation of Paper Mills, which threaten the integrity of the scientific research environment;
  2. Actions that impede the global dissemination of a country's scholarly work and the efficient use of publishing funds.

Both categories highlight significant obstacles in fostering a healthy scientific research community. In the 2025 release, journals will no longer be categorized based on varying levels of warning risk.

It is vital to note that the EWL should not be confused with previous year lists. Journals that have previously been listed but have since demonstrated notable improvements through corrective actions will be excluded from subsequent lists and no longer be considered warned journals.
