Exploring the ShanghaiRanking's Academic Ranking of World Universities

Recently, the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was released. City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) has achieved a significant milestone by entering the global top 100 for the first time, ranking 99th worldwide and 2nd in Hong Kong. 

The ARWU was originally established in 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and has been updated annually. From 2009 onwards, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has been produced and copyrighted by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. Each year, ARWU evaluates over 2500 universities, with the results for the top 1000 universities being made public.

Ranking Criteria: 
Universities are ranked by several academic or research performance indicators, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, Highly Cited Researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution.

Indicators and Weights:

Quality of Faculty Staff of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals Award 20%
Highly Cited Researchers HiCi 20%
Research Output Papers published in Nature and Science* N&S 20%
Papers indexed in Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index (Web of Science) PUB 20%
Per Capita Performance Per capita academic performance of an institution PCP 10%
*For institutions specialized in humanities and social sciences, N&S is not considered, and the weight of N&S is relocated to other indicators.
