Highly Cited Paper: Is There a Chance for My Paper?

Essential Science Indicators (ESI) is an analytical tool that helps you identify top-performing research in Web of Science Core Collection. ESI surveys more than 11,000 journals from around the world to rank authors, institutions, countries, and journals in 22 broad fields based on publication and citation performance. Data covers a rolling 10-year period and includes bimonthly updates to rankings and citation counts.

Highly Cited Papers are papers that perform in the top 1% based on the number of citations received when compared to other papers published in the same field in the same year.

How to determine if your paper has a chance of being selected as a highly cited paper?

To achieve the goal, here are three main steps:

  • Retrieve the publication information of this article from the Web of Science (WOS).

In the Web of Science Core Collection, locate your article to determine its publication year, journal, and citation count.

  • Determine the ESI subject category to which the journal belongs.

Go to the ESI database homepage → Click on “Help” → Select “Journal List” → Download the “ESI journal list” file → Identify the subject area to which the journal belongs.

  • Check the threshold for highly cited papers for the publication year of your paper.

Go to the ESI homepage → Select “Citation Thresholds” → Click on “Highly Cited Thresholds” → Search for the threshold. Then, compare your paper's current number of citations with the threshold.

For example, if your paper has been cited 18 times, you need at least 2 more citations to reach the threshold for a highly cited paper (this is a rough estimation).

However, this method can only provide a rough assessment. When a paper reaches the citation threshold in a Web of Science (WOS) search but is not designated as a highly cited paper, this may be related to the ESI indexed time period and the index of journals.
