Essential Science Indicators (ESI) is an analytical tool designed to identify top-performing research within the Web of Science Core Collection. ESI evaluates over 11,000 journals globally to rank authors, institutions, countries, and journals across 22 broad fields based on their publication and citation performances.

In the context of an institution, the ESI top 1% or 1‰ research field means that the institution is performing in the top 1% or 1‰ when compared to peers.

  • On the right side, institutions entering the ESI top 1% in that research field are displayed in order of citation count. Click on the arrow next to "Institutions" to bring up Filters, enter the institution name to quickly locate the target institution. The number displayed represents the institution's ranking. It's crucial to keep the "Cites" in descending order. For instance, In the field of "Materials Science," among 1547 institutions entering the top 1%, an institution ranking below 155 signifies entry into the top 1‰.

Similarly, click on the arrow next to "Countries/Regions" to apply filters. For example, enter "Hong Kong" and view all local institutions from Hong Kong that have entered the top 1% in "Materials Science." If a local institution's rank is less than 155, it means that it has entered the top 1‰.
