Understanding Stanford's Top 2% Scientists and Highly Cited Researchers

Stanford University has recently released an update of the list representing the top 2 % of the most-cited scientists in various disciplines. The report was prepared by a team of experts led by Prof. John Ioannidis, an esteemed professor at Stanford University.

Similarly, the Highly Cited Researchers list by Clarivate is another very famous list for scholar ranking.

Here are some basic tips for understanding the main points of each.

  Stanford’s top 2% Scientists The Highly Cited Researchers 
Data Source Scopus data Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index
Subject Fields 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields according to the standard Science-Metrix classification  20 broad fields in ESI
Year Range In the 2024 edition, Career-long data updated to end-of-2023 and single recent-year data pertain to citations received during calendar year 2023 . In the 2023 edition, publications rank in the top 1% by citations within the 2012-2022 publication year range .
Methodology

The ranking is achieved via a composite indicator (c-score) that is calculated based on 6 citation indicators as follows using Scopus data. 
•    Total citations (NC) 
•    H-index (H) 
•    Hm-index - H-index adjusted for the no. of authors on a paper (Hm) 
•    No. of citations to papers as a single author (NCS) 
•    No. of citations to papers as single or first author (NCSF) 
•    No. of citations to papers as single, first, or last author (NCSFL)

•   The first analysis stage begins with a citation triage of records to identify a list of candidates. Identify authors with a significant number of Highly Cited Papers in an ESI field at the threshold for inclusion and above. 
•   Another criterion for selection is that the researcher must have enough citations to their Highly Cited Papers to meet the author field citation threshold found within ESI.
