Information for CityU students

What is the difference between a thesis and a dissertation?

  • At CityU, a thesis is undertaken while studying for a research postgraduate degree, i.e. MPhil., Ph.D. & professional doctorate, while a dissertation is undertaken for a taught postgraduate degree.
  • In the US, the word "thesis" is used for a master's course, while "dissertation" is generally applied to a doctorate. In the UK, the reverse is true.
