Comparing EndNote 20 & EndNote 21: how are they different?
Install EndNote Desktop 21 to your computer or laptop:
The downloaded package enables you to install EndNote without requiring a product key.
Before installing, make sure to follow these steps:
- Verify compatibility and system requirements. EndNote 21 requires Windows 10 or macOS 10.14 or higher.
- Back up any existing EndNote library files and any customized content files, such as output styles and connection files.
- Uninstall the previous version of EndNote. For more information, refer to EndNote: Upgrade from an older version.
- Close all open programs, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and other applications. Also, disable any background software, such as virus protection software.
Installation procedure:
- Download and save the zip file to the local drive.
- Unzip the zip file.
- Run the setup.msi file and then follow the screen prompts to proceed with the installation.

Tip:
If you are near completion of your paper or thesis using EndNote 20 or an earlier version, it is advisable not to upgrade to EndNote 21.
